What polished concrete actually is
Polished concrete is not a coating. Nothing is laid on top of the slab and nothing is stuck down to it. The slab you already own is cut back with progressively finer diamond tooling until the surface you want is exposed, then chemically densified so the cement matrix hardens, then closed with a sealer chosen for the room. What you walk on is the concrete itself, which is why it does not peel, lift at the edges or wear through in the traffic lanes the way a coating does.
That is also why the outcome is decided by the slab rather than by a product brochure. Two floors poured from different mixes and taken to the same depth will not look the same. It is the reason we grind a sample on your own concrete before the main floor is committed, and the reason we post a free polished concrete sample tile to anyone still deciding.
Four decisions make the floor
Colour is set in the pour, so it is the one decision that has to be made before the concrete truck arrives. Aggregate is the stone in the mix and it determines what appears once the surface opens up. Depth of cut runs from a natural polish that keeps the cement cream through salt and pepper to full aggregate exposure. Polish level is the grit the floor is stopped at, from a 200 grit matte to a 3000 grit mirror.
Work through them in that order and there are no surprises at handover. Start with concrete colour and aggregate choices, then set the exposure on the depth of cut ladder, then pick the sheen on the polish level guide.

Why the pour matters more than the grind
A ground floor can only be as good as the concrete underneath it. Mix design, the consistency of the placement, how flat the slab was screeded and how it was cured all show up in the finished surface. A slab that was poured with polishing in mind gives a cleaner aggregate spread and an even cut across the whole floor. One that was not can still finish beautifully, but the honest answer is that it will read as a floor with character rather than a uniform one.
Timing is the other half of it. Polishing commences at a minimum concrete age of 28 days from the date of pour. Before that the concrete has not reached strength and the aggregate tears rather than cuts. If you are building, bring us in at the drawing stage rather than at practical completion. Larger jobs take us into the Waikato and up to Auckland.
